Two weeks to Mo!

There are only 2 weeks to go until the start of Movember. A month of a hair growth, itchy skin and raising a lot of money to support men’s health. Now of course, the Mo growing is all important for awareness raising for the global Movember Mo-vement, but I’m also looking forward to shining a well-deserved light on charities doing amazing work locally.

It’s seemed like a match made in heaven to do so through the platform of my hugely popular Yoga For Men classes in Keynsham. In my recent blog, I announced how excited I was to have the incredible Suicide Prevention Bristol delivering a short talk and Q & A after my Yoga For Men class at Keynsham Baptist Church on Monday, 4th November. Well, I’m really pleased to announce that further talks have been confirmed next month.

We Hear You (WHY) cancer counselling talk, Monday 11th November, 7.45 – 8pm

First up is We Hear You (WHY) who provide free professional counselling for children and adults directly or indirectly affected by cancer or a life threatening condition. This includes family, friends, colleagues, carers as well as patients. WHY is a Frome-based charity that offers its services across the region, delivering a minimum of 100 counselling sessions each week across 20 locations – although this does not currently include Keynsham. So this provides an opportunity to raise much needed awareness in the area on WHY’s services that extends to online counselling and art & drama therapy. WHY is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so it’s great to be able to mark this impressive milestone by having them deliver a talk after my Yoga For Men class on 11th November.

It’s In the bag (testicular cancer) talk, Monday 18th November , 7.45pm – 8pm

Next is It’s in the bag. One of the things I’ve loved about researching charities to deliver these talks has been uncovering gems such as It’s in the bag. To be honest, I’m surprised I hadn’t noticed them before with their bold orange branding making a statement. It’s a Bristol-based charity that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary at a glamorous ball. The work they are doing to raise awareness for testicular cancer is hugely impressive. I love their Pledge to Check page and video on how to do monthly checks on your balls.

Bristol Mind mental health talk, Monday 25th November, 7.45 – 8pm

The final talk during Movember will be from Bristol Mind to talk men’s mental health. I last worked with Bristol Mind, raising money for the charity as part of a workplace wellbeing event I ran in Bristol earlier this year. I was so pleased when Bristol Mind confirmed they would do a talk. Unknown to me at the time, they do not receive any direct funding from national Mind so rely heavily on their local fundraising activities. Bristol Mind provide much needed mental health services such as a community outreach helpline and wellbeing in the workplace training including for Mental Health First Aid.

A seriously impressive line up of talks

I am excited by the talks we have planned next month. Yoga For Men classes will run over slightly shorter timings (7 – 7.45pm) to accommodate the talk at the end of each class. The yoga classes are exclusively for men, but anyone can join for the local charity talks. All payments received on the night (less costs) will be donated to the local charity delivering the talk. Alongside this, For those that are unable to make the classes, I have set up a Just Giving page for donations to Movember, and the donations I have received so far have made me jump for joy and feel so grateful for those that support this cause.
